Tower Garden for Environmental Literacy

A vertical garden was purchased and installed in an ongoing gardening project with a non-profit daycare in order to further understanding of the origin and importance of our food supply in an environmental context. Hands-on interaction with the children and staff was provided as well as literacy support. Members enjoyed the opportunity to share their knowledge of gardening, plant care, and the environment. We encourage the children and their parents to consider the environment by participation in gathering recyclables. Altrusa International Club of Lake City provided 10 happy adult volunteers who encouraged the child’s individual participation. As well as supporting and teaching the staff. Juice Plus, the supplier of the Tower, provides teaching modules for literacy and environment. Happy House provides well chaperoned giggling and smiling children. Together we have fun learning about the earth and how important plants are to our lives.
