Annual Purse Stuffing and Donation to The Montgomery County Women’s Center

Every Fall for 6 years, we collect gently used donated purses, costume jewelry, toiletries, new makeup samples, soaps etc. The end of October, we have a Purse Stuffing Project on a Sunday afternoon. In early December we go to The Women’s Shelter Facility and bring a Santa to give out donated books to the Children, take Christmas cookies and refreshments, and deliver the filled purses to the residents. In 2023, we donated 164 filled purses.

Make A Difference Day

Filled 65 Little Free Libraries on October 28 with1,908 books throughout San Antonio TX. Our club collected donated books from thrift stores, book stores, garage sales since July 2023. We also maintain four free little libraries our club built at local schools as well in October.

Seniors Magazine Bonanza

Collected more than 130 gently used magazines to share with our two adoptive senior centers in North San Antonio. Members collected a variety of magazine which our seniors will enjoy. An excellent no-cost service project any club can organize.

Make A Difference Day – Health Fair for Seniors

Members worked in conjunction with our local hospital and health service providers for a health fair geared toward educating in women’s health, giving flu vaccines, taking vital signs and serving lunch to the citizens living near the South Side Senior Center. We had books to read to children while they waited; however, due to inclement weather, very few children came. A few books were given away. Four door prizes of Wal Mart Gift cards were given away. A woman came who had not been to the doctor in a long time because a friend brought her. She had her vitals and glucose levels read and spoke with a doctor about blood pressure issues. Hopefully, this exposure will have made a difference for her. Twenty nine flu shots were given. Hot dogs and chili were served to about 40 people. Eight Altrusans attended and we got one new member through the planning with another prospect from the event.

Fundraising

September found Altrusa of Rockwall, TX holding their second annual Pancake Breakfast at Applebee’s Restaurant in Rockwall, TX. The fundraiser was held to raise funds for all of the service projects that we do for our community. We supply books to schools, give backpacks to students, deliver Thanksgiving baskets, have A-21 jars to fill, make Christmas cards for the soldiers and Valentine’s Day cards for a retirement center. We are a very small club of 7 members plus several dual members, but we love to give back to our community!

Rainbow Room Rockwall, TX-helping out

The Rainbow Room is also a non-profit in Rockwall, Tx. They help children that have been removed from the homes by CPS by finding shelter, clothing, school supplies and Christmas gifts. We, of Rockwall Altrusa, are honored to support this worthy endeavor. We supply them with backpacks throughout the school year and help wrap Christmas presents in December.

Books for elementary schools

We were able to gather books from the Half Price Book Store in Rockwall, TX. We delivered them to the librarian at Rochell Elementary in Rockwall. A number of students joined us to have their picture taken with their new books. Our literacy goal is to give ‘every student a book in the Rockwall School District’.
We recently learned about the summer readying program that is put on by the district, so we will be gathering books for this needy project. NO STUDENT SHOULD GO WITHOUT A BOOK!

Remembering our Veterans

We had a work night to assemble decorative gift bags to be given to the Veterans at the Bonham Veterans home. The bags are blue with white stars. They are filled with toiletries and candy. The sugar free candies are designated with a red ribbon instead of a blue. The also have a small American flag and Forth of July pins or necklaces to wear. These will be delivered by our Altrusans the first week in July or on the Forth.
