Pamper Packs for Women

Fifty Pamper Packs for women were purchased commercially thus supporting a local business and were delivered to various organisations within our community for women going through a tough time. We chose Rest Homes, District Nurses, a Disability group, Social Services, who at their discretion gifted the pamper packs to worthy recipients.
We were told that some of the recipients were in tears after receiving their gift and that it was so rewarding to be remembered. The small things we take for granted often really make a difference in another person’s life.

Christmas in October

In support of our virtual club project, we organized a district-wide collection of Christmas gifts for children rescued from human trafficking sheltered in Baja California, Mexico. The shelter is ran by International Network of Hearts (INH). We gathered a list of interests for each child and created an Amazon gift registry. The gifts were given to INH at our Christmas party.

Making a Difference, honoring Veterans

Altrusa International of San Sebastián, PR Inc. celebrated the “Make a Difference Day” honoring Veterans from American League Post 51 Rodrigo Font. It was a very special day. We started with breakfast, getting acquainted with the veterans and spouses attending the event, and explaining to our veterans all the fun stuff planned for the day. We continued by driving to the local historic sites. Visiting museums, monuments and the Historic Archives Building. Here we were received by local Government Reps. that presented us with two (2) Government
Proclamations, formally declaring this day to honor Veterans from Post 51. The day concluded with a succulent lunch in a local restaurant, certificates of appreciation to all that helped in making the activity possible and gave gifts to all veterans. It was an inspiring day volunteering with veterans. We not only spent time with Vets, took them to places they had not visited before, but most importantly we listened to their stories, acknowledged their service, and got to know veterans from our hometown. Veterans from Post 51, were without any doubt, overwhelmed. they gave words of appreciation that touched us all. We should be aware that veterans are forgotten, and that sometimes even a small gesture can have a big impact. Altrusa actually went out there and did it for veterans– making their day, making them feel special, making a difference.

Feed Artesia

Artesia Altrusans partnered with the local girl scout and boy scout troops to collect and distribute non-perishable food items. Members were given permission to set up a donation station in front of the local grocery store. Flyers with specific food needs were passed out to patrons as they entered. Girl scouts were on hand to help pass out flyers and organize donations. They also took the opportunity to sell cookies! This increased the number of individuals who stopped – everyone loves Girl Scout cookies! Donations were collected from 9 AM until 4 PM on Saturday. All goods were distributed and taken to three different local food banks. The Boy Scouts came and helped Altrusans unload all of the products.
In total, over 1,000 pounds of food were donated. Benefitting three different local organizations that, collectively, serve over 3,000 residents. Artesia Altrusans look forward to this event every year. Spending time with the Scouts gives us a boost of energy and includes them in an opportunity to serve.
In the past, we have also partnered with local schools, who did their own canned food drives and then donated all of their collected items to our Club. The main benefit is allowing children to serve their community, building stronger leaders for the future.

Today a Reader – Tomorrow a Leader

The Muncie Altrusa Club in partnership with Classroom Connection of East Central Indiana, Muncie Public Library and Second Harvest Food Bank participated in the Ball State University Homecoming Parade on October 23rd. Books were transported in six wagons decorated with balloons. Representatives from the four groups distributed 1200 books to the children along the parade route. This activity was a part of the National Make a Difference Day that is celebrated across the country as a day when individuals and organizations come together to make a difference in the lives of others and their communities.

We are here for you!

With the tagline “We are here for you” on October 24, 2021, Altrusa International of San Sebastián, PR Inc. held the “Make a Difference Day”. This year it was dedicated to the patients of the Hogar CREA of San Sebastián, a rehab facility that offers residential treatment to patients. We started with messages by the MADD Committee President and Club President. We shared general information about Altrusa and how we impact the community. The Representative of Hogar CREA, Mr. Raúl Vázquez, was very excited that we had chosen them to carry out the activity. He expressed how alone they felt, because since the pandemic they we not allowed to receive frequent visits. Also, that sometimes they feel forgotten by the rest of the community. We spoked about the International Peace Day activity where we intend to motivate others to perform acts of kindness to achieve peace and well-being. We then proceeded to raise the white flag as a peace symbol, which they received with great humility and spirituality. A motivational talk was conducted entitled “Happy Hormones”. Letting them know that we need to laugh more, promote happiness, and achieve a full life! The day concluded with lunch, gifts, and the signing of a collaborative agreement between the two organizations. It was an inspiring day of volunteering. Not only did we spend quality time with the patients, but we listen to their stories, acknowledge their needs, and created bonds of friendship with people in our community. We were reminded that sometimes a small gesture can have a great impact and can make a difference.

Socktober Collection in Conjunction with ILHS InterAct Club

Meredith Altrusa helped in the collection of socks during the month of October in honor of Make A Difference Day. A variety of socks for all ages were donated to the Community focused InterAct Club at Inter-Lakes High School, who in turn, provide to those in need. This is both a service project in response to a need in the Lakes Region, but also working to assist another Community Club comprised of our own local high schoolers…a joint effort within Meredith.

Books for Prison’s Library

The Bermuda Club purchased and donated $300.00 worth of books to assist in furnishing the library of Bermuda’s prison for our 2020 ‘Make a Difference Day”.

The books were selected by a representative of the prison and focused mainly on “self help” type reading material. As an example, there were books on anger management, how to start and run a business, how to effectively communicate with others and other similar titles. In this assortment of books, there were also some very interesting fiction titles by a popular author which seemed to be very popular with the prisoners.

The books were collected by a representative of the prison and subsequently the Club received a letter of appreciation and thanks from the head of the prison’s education department.

Ables Fable Book Donation (Make A Difference Day/Literacy)

The Evansville Altrusans, Make a Difference Day Community Service Project was a WIN-Win in many ways! The Club donated 50 copies of Gary’s Gigantic Dream for distribution to kindergarten, first grade, and special education classrooms in the Evansville area in support of literacy and inclusion. The book is fun, bright, colorful and educational. It takes you on Gary’s journey of being evaluated for his very first wheelchair. Upon receiving his chair, Gary discovers newfound independence and zest for life and a gigantic dream of his own. Dr. Nicole Julia, the book’s author, donated 20% of the book’s sales during August and September to the Evansville Stop Light City Playground. This is an inclusive playground for children with disabilities being constructed in phases on the Westside of Evansville. The Club also purchased copies of the book to be placed in rotation with our books for the Trail with a Tale.
