Books for Backpack Buddies and Beyond

Since home libraries play a major role in a child’s reading ability, our Books for Backpack Buddies provides 305 of the poorest students in Grades pre-k to five a book each month. We have gone way BEYOND this to another 1000 school children (389 Pre-k, 227 Kindergarten and Grade One , and 410 Read to Me kids in Grades 2- 4 and their siblings. at home). Our 9,469 books last year were especially appreciated by our teachers because of the school interruptions caused by covid As of Feb 7, 2022 we have given 78,567 books since beginning our project

Holiday Toys for The Children’s Advocacy Center

During our Holiday Party/Business meeting in December, we once again collected toys for the children of The Children’s Advocacy Center, which we have been doing for many years now. The Children’s Advocacy Center provides a child-friendly, community based facility where a child victim can be safely interviewed, provided with crisis counseling, receive medical exams and long term specialized therapy, when needed.

Thanksgiving Turkeys for Vets

We learned that the local AMVETS Post needed help with getting turkeys & food cooked for the Vets for Thanksgiving. Two of our members and a prospective member immediately volunteered at the meeting and delivered 2 cooked turkeys & a ham to them. There were many nice comments from the Post about these ladies and all their loving work for our Vets.

“Uplifting Smile”

We found out that one of the youth at Forward Paths had been battered & had her car damaged by her now ex-boyfriend. She needed a root canal, crown work & her car fixed, along with the support all battered women need. Many of her needs were met through Forward Paths, an organization we continue to support whenever we can because they help youth who are homeless. Anonymous donations from members helped this youth fix her car. She paid for the root canal on her own from money she had saved & we were able to help her by taking a $500 check directly to the dentist on the day of the crown work. One of our members took her to lunch & she later sent her a picture of herself smiling= AMAZING!

Random Acts of Kindness

In support of the U.N. “Make A Difference Day” we asked our members to do “Random Acts of Kindness” and share them anonymously. These random acts included: treating co-workers to a special lunch at a place they all wanted to try, helping a student through a project she was worried about, which lifted the student’s spirits (and which she later found out she did great in), helped a neighbor get items they needed to quarantine, paid for the person behind them at the drive-through & left the rest as a tip, picked up breakfast at a meeting, which was a pleasant surprise for everyone, raised money for a scholarship in a golf tournament, held the door open for someone at a store, called a cousin to offer words of encouragement since they lost their job 6 months ago.

Make a Difference Day: In Support of First Responders

In support of the U.N. “Make A Difference Day” on Saturday, October 24th, 2020, we had a catered dinner by our usual lunch caterer (Debbie), deliver an amazing meal to about 20 health care workers of the night shift of LifeStream, in support of First Responders. LifeStream is a behavioral health and social services organization in our community, and one of our members works there and is very passionate about how hard the employees have been working during this pandemic year & how they needed our support.

Literacy Project during Covid-19

We were able to donate $250 to Rimes Early Learning Center to help them purchase books and incentives to encourage the children to read. The teacher has sent us pictures of the children with their books and incentives, which have been a joy to look at, during these difficult times.

Toiletry Kits for victims of Domestic Violence

Our club members have donated for several months: different types of toiletry items, make-up & toiletry bags, hygiene products, blankets, underwear, as well as gifts cards to be donated to a local domestic violence shelter called “The Haven”, to which we have made donations in the past. Over 40 toiletry kits were given to “The Haven” and enough donations were left over to donate items to “The Open Door”, a homeless drop-in shelter which serves women & men who are victims of domestic violence, as well as veterans who are homeless.

International Literacy Day: Impacting the children of homeless youth at Forward Paths

International Literacy Day 2020 was celebrated by dropping off books and toys to Forward Paths for the children of the youth in their program to encourage reading. We have very close ties to Forward Paths, a local foundation whose President, Denise Burry is also a Lake County Altrusan. Forward Paths helps homeless and unaccompanied youth find a forward path to success.
