Gift for Teaching School Supplies program

Our club has supported our Gift for Teaching foundation which has collected school supplies and items donated from companies or organizations to be available to teachers in 3 counties that are free to teachers during the school year. Surplus items that otherwise would have been thrown away started the foundation and it has grown to provide so many supplies that the teachers have a chance to supply classrooms for their students freely. This has made the basics school supplies available for students which otherwise go to school without. Our club annually have Gift for Teaching as our clubs guest speaker and have a school supply collection in which we bring to the meeting. This has been a 100% participation by our club..

Children’s Advocacy Center project Children’s comfort tote bags

Altrusa Orlando-Winter Park has contributed a large monetary donation to the Children’s Advocacy Center as sponsors of a children’s comforting interview room at the Center and we also donate children friendly decorated tote bags to be given to children who are at the center for the time they are cared for during a very stressful time in their life. The tote bags are something the children have as something that is there’s to keep and hopefully brings them comfort.

Community GET FIT Initiative

Get Fit Lake City was a 14-week program with 4 key events intended to support participants in achieving, developing and becoming their best-self. Each Altrusa sponsored event is described below.
Kick Off Breakfast with encouraging Key Note Speaker, partnered with a local hospital.
Biggest Loser – Anyone in the community could participate in the Biggest Loser. We partnered with the local gyms and the gyms offered special gym memberships for participants. The winner was awarded $500.
Color Run – Mid way through the 14-week Biggest Loser Challenge, we hosted a 5K Color Run. It was a fun encouraging event to get local residents, students and Altrusans to challenge themselves to run/walk a 5K timed event. A total of 130 participants registered for the event. The event began with a flash of color smoke grenades, and there was a total of 6 color stations, where participants were splashed with color and cheered on to success by the CHS Cheerleaders, CHS Drumline, Altrusans!
The Corporate Cup is basically a field day for adults, partnered with the local community college. Many businesses have begun adopting wellness programs within their organization. This event gave our local businesses the opportunities for personal development and team building.

Pretty Panties for Underprivileged women in

The purpose of this project was to bring encouragement to women in the depressed economy and violent society of Jamaica West Indies with a simple personal gift. The targeted women reside in a rural mountain community outside of Montego Bay. The need was identified by Jamaica Mission Partnership , a group of volunteers from USA churches in North Florida and South Carolina who provide leadership and support to Jamaican church workers, facilitating Vacation Bible School for hundreds of children, youth, and adults each July. Altrusa members chose to write notes of encouragement to the women of the church sharing “positive perspectives” including quotes, scriptures, and words of support. Note cards were available at Altrusa meetings to be written there or taken home and returned at the following meeting. Each Altrusa member purchased one pair of new panties, any size or style, for these women. We know how encouraging a new pair of panties can be to lift a woman’s spirit, especially one who has little or nothing in worldly possessions. Panties were purchased and delivered by individual members to a collection point at a local business. Members sorted panties by size and repackaged them in zip lock bags for delivery.

Tower Garden for Environmental Literacy

A vertical garden was purchased and installed in an ongoing gardening project with a non-profit daycare in order to further understanding of the origin and importance of our food supply in an environmental context. Hands-on interaction with the children and staff was provided as well as literacy support. Members enjoyed the opportunity to share their knowledge of gardening, plant care, and the environment. We encourage the children and their parents to consider the environment by participation in gathering recyclables. Altrusa International Club of Lake City provided 10 happy adult volunteers who encouraged the child’s individual participation. As well as supporting and teaching the staff. Juice Plus, the supplier of the Tower, provides teaching modules for literacy and environment. Happy House provides well chaperoned giggling and smiling children. Together we have fun learning about the earth and how important plants are to our lives.

Girls’ Summit: A Day for at-risk 6th graders–“ Girls with Dreams, Become Women with Vision”

The purpose of Girls’ Summit is to provide a forum for 6th grade girls to address issues that concern them and to help support their positive future choices. It provides intergenerational connections between local girls and business women. “GIRLS WHO DREAM BECOME WOMEN WITH VISION” summit topics included: 1) instruction on STEM Project with the Girls Robotic High School Team, 2) Self-Empowerment through an Art and Service Project in coordination with the Art League of Lake City, and 3) Presentation, Dress, Table Manners, Etiquette and self-proficiency in the kitchen with a local caterer. The 30 girls were registered that morning, received their t-shirt and provided a nutritious breakfast. Our service project included making hand colored cards with well wishes for local seniors. There were a total of 16 Altrusans on hand to make it all run extremely smoothly, being an example of service and leadership to the next generation. After creating a painting and programming a robot, the girls made their own lunch and used laminated placemats with the proper placement of eating utensils. Beautiful pink bags containing a hard-bound empowerment journal, pens, thank you notes, handmade cookies, and other items donated by local businesses were given to the girls.
