Make A Difference Day Halloween Party

Children’s Square is a facility that houses children who cannot stay in their home or be in a Foster Home. Our club had them decorate treat bags, decorate a ball cap that they keep, played 2 Halloween games (Halloween bean toss and decorate the mummy) and fill their treat bags. Our club spends 3 hours with them with set up and tear down. They are always excited to have a party. This year we used stress balls and mittens as prizes. They love the Halloween stories that we read to them. The extra candy and toilet paper (for the mummy game) is left with the cottage counselors. Many have never been to a party. We had 17 children attend, 7 counselors, 12 of our members and 2 of the members daughters. We also partner with Children’s Square for their birthday closet. Members who were unable to attend sent candy and treats for their bags.

Homebound book delivery

Each month our Altrusa members deliver book bags to shut ins in our community. The blue route serves 8 people with 51 books. The red route serves 7 people with 52 books and the pink route serves 14 people with 55 books. The Burlington Public Library prepare the bags. Our members take turns delivering every month and have been doing this service for many years.

Trick or Treat for Literacy

Altrusa of Ames “Make A Difference Day” was held at Ames Public Library in Iowa on October 28. It was organized by our Service Committee. We partnered with Ames Public Library and Downtown Ames Trick or Treat Day, which is always the Friday before Halloween. Altrusa of Ames sets up a table at the library to give away children books, candy, and a toy to any child who passes our table. Altrusans have collected many children books for all ages during the year to prepare for this event. A bookplate is placed inside the cover of each book to designate the book is a gift from Altrusa. This year, 430 books were given away to children. The count could have been higher considering the table was very busy and a few could have picked up a book and been missed in the count. All in all, this was a very successful project for “Make A Difference Day” and also a project to build literacy.

Memory Care “Sing Along”

Three members, representing our club visited two local memory care facilities. Due to Covid 19, our traditional group “sing along” turned into delivering a Karaoke style Christmas DVD. While missing the interaction with the residents, we were able to keep bringing the joy of singing and music by giving an opportunity to enjoy a special “sing along” for the holidays. Experts have confirmed that music–especially singing is really helpful to those suffering with Alzheimer’s or related dementia.
Treat bags with chocolate candy were also delivered to each facility for residents and staff members to enjoy.
A special request for materials for a group Fall craft project was also honored at one of the facilities.
Additionally, a few members raked leaves for a grateful Mobile Meals recipient in celebration of our club’s 50 Years of Altrusa Mobile Meals and Make A Difference Day.

Make A Difference Day — Adoption of the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter Playhouse

The Brookings club celebrated “Make a Difference Day” by adopting the Brookings Domestic Abuse Shelter’s (BDAS) playhouse. The playhouse was in need of a new coat of paint, flooring and general sprucing up to make it more inviting for the families that utilize the abuse shelter. Altrusa and BDAS staff decided to spruce up the playhouse with primary colors and a circus-train theme inspired by the popular children’s book “The Little Engine that Could”. This was a fun project that continued to evolve with new flooring, curtains and furniture. Altrusa and BDAS extend a special thank you to Sherwin Williams for the paint and Barrett’s for the flooring. The donations certainly provided Altrusa with the means to “Make a Difference”. The Brookings Altrusa club will continue to provide books for the playhouse.
