Digital tools on the way to college

The project consisted of offering virtual workshops on applications and technological topics
once a month, in periods of 1.5 hours, free of charge to public high school students, after
school hours. The objective was to teach students going to college, the use and integration of
different digital tools that would allow them to effectively prepare their tasks and academic
presentations. We used the virtual modality because of the closure of schools due to the
COVID-19 pandemic. Twenty students were selected, as well as, the applications and topics for the workshops. We recruited professionals who donated their time to offer workshops. Eight workshops were offered: Microsoft Word; PowerPoint; Cloud; Excel; Digital portfolio; “Google Form”; Mathematical applications; and Search Engines. Task were assigned where students had to apply the skills learned. Attendance was recorded using ZOOM. As part of the project, on September 8, 2020, International Literacy Day, we broadcast through WLRP radio station a program on the topic: Digital Literacy. After evaluating the execution of the project, we quote a letter of appreciation received “…Without a doubt, something is learned every day and you have been that teaching channel for our youth, providing them with the necessary tools on their way to college, thank you! …”. A rewarding achievement marked under extraordinary circumstances as was the general lockdown in Puerto Rico due to the pandemic!

“Nourishing the Body, Strengthening the Mind”

It was aimed for senior adults with limited resources participating in the Ciudad de Oro community, as well as several entities and the Catholic Church to impact around 843 people in different communities in our hometown. In addition, the Pamphlet of Activities “Nurturing the Body, Strengthening the Mind” was prepared to stimulate the functions cognitive skills in elderly. This booklet contained relaxing activities, puzzles and exciting games for senior adults to strengthen memory health, to support their well-being. Among the achievements we had in the project were: Collaborative Agreement with the San Sebastián Social Action Center for the Elderly. As part of the activities held, we had the commemoration of International Food Day with food delivery to elderlies at their home. We also delivered food to different sectors of the community, which included the distribution of messages raising awareness about good nutrition during the Pandemic and positive well-being messages. Around 400 masks, 60 hand sanitizers, 12 bottles of liquid soap and 2 boxes of alcohol wipes were delivered to the Center for the Elderly. One of our biggest achievements was being able to make awareness of the need to serve the population of older adults with good nutrition and support their mental health. This was done with the help of our local radio station WLRP. Altrusa showed we care about our elderlies, through a project that helped them with their mental, physical, and emotional health and well-being.

Preparing myself to receive you.

Our international relations service project had the purpose of helping pregnant women in Port Margot, Haiti in their prenatal and postnatal care, and to provide them with the necessary items to receive and feed their baby. The project name was “Preparing myself to receive you”. For this service project we had the collaboration of the Servant of María Order from Mayaguez, PR. We also had the help of local doctors, pharmacies, laboratories, and community clinics that gave us donations of items and medications “over the counter” (OTC), among others. The project concluded with the delivery to the Servant of María Order of 41 boxes containing: prenatal vitamins, folic acid and iron pills, and sanitary napkins for pregnant women; OTC medications and personal hygiene products for infants and adults; baby bottles, milk, wet wipes, disposable diapers, baby clothes and blankets; hand sanitizer and masks. This project provided prenatal care for 75 women and supplies for their baby; OTC medicines and basic necessities for the population. The Servants of Mary would deliver these products. They were very grateful with the result of our project. Over $4,000 in products and materials was finally given to the community in Haiti. We achieved our goals of serving and improving the health and quality of life of women and their babies. In addition, we impacted others with the medicines and items sent to the dispensary, benefiting a community of around five thousand (5,000) people. Making a Difference, honoring Veterans

Altrusa International of San Sebastián, PR Inc. celebrated the “Make a Difference Day” honoring Veterans from American League Post 51 Rodrigo Font. It was a very special day. We started with breakfast, getting acquainted with the veterans and spouses attending the event, and explaining to our veterans all the fun stuff planned for the day. We continued by driving to the local historic sites. Visiting museums, monuments and the Historic Archives Building. Here we were received by local Government Reps. that presented us with two (2) Government
Proclamations, formally declaring this day to honor Veterans from Post 51. The day concluded with a succulent lunch in a local restaurant, certificates of appreciation to all that helped in making the activity possible and gave gifts to all veterans. It was an inspiring day volunteering with veterans. We not only spent time with Vets, took them to places they had not visited before, but most importantly we listened to their stories, acknowledged their service, and got to know veterans from our hometown. Veterans from Post 51, were without any doubt, overwhelmed. they gave words of appreciation that touched us all. We should be aware that veterans are forgotten, and that sometimes even a small gesture can have a big impact. Altrusa actually went out there and did it for veterans– making their day, making them feel special, making a difference.

Helping and Protecting sister countries

Helping and protecting sister countries is the name of the international relations project made by Altrusa of San Sebastián, Puerto Rico. The project responded to the need of face masks as countries battled the coronavirus pandemic. The purpose of the project was to help by sending “survival kits” to Africa and Dominican Republic for free distribution.

We produced six hundred survival kits, which contained a mask, two pre-cut masks, thread, needles, instructions for sewing, a hand soap and educational information on the importance of hand hygiene.

Kits were sent to Africa and the Dominican Republic for free distribution with the support of three community partnerships: EDP University, Ferries del Caribe and Resurrection Life Church. These organizations supported us with the sewing and shipping of the kits, as well as donating materials and supplies.

In addition to expanding international relations, we raised awareness in the local community about the importance of masks, their use, cleaning and preparation through the handouts prepared and through the Radio Program broadcasted.

The use of face masks can contribute to control the corona virus if available and properly used. Encouraging own production with guidance and awareness helps improve the accessibility of face masks particularly among the vulnerable population. For Altrusa, this project was saving lives with face masks.

Tijeritas for Kids (Scissors for Kids)

The “Tijeritas for Kids” (Scissors for Kids) service project arises from the need to provide free haircuts to children with limited economic resources in the town of Guánica monthly basis. Our goal is to impact the educational system of Guánica with free haircuts aimed at school-age students, in which good hygiene and sanitation practices are promoted to provide personal care and health service. The fusion of both concepts creates in the student a level of self-esteem and confidence based on their appearance. Due to the success of this service project in the town of Guánica, we will soon include elderly and disabled people from our community.

We are here for you!

With the tagline “We are here for you” on October 24, 2021, Altrusa International of San Sebastián, PR Inc. held the “Make a Difference Day”. This year it was dedicated to the patients of the Hogar CREA of San Sebastián, a rehab facility that offers residential treatment to patients. We started with messages by the MADD Committee President and Club President. We shared general information about Altrusa and how we impact the community. The Representative of Hogar CREA, Mr. Raúl Vázquez, was very excited that we had chosen them to carry out the activity. He expressed how alone they felt, because since the pandemic they we not allowed to receive frequent visits. Also, that sometimes they feel forgotten by the rest of the community. We spoked about the International Peace Day activity where we intend to motivate others to perform acts of kindness to achieve peace and well-being. We then proceeded to raise the white flag as a peace symbol, which they received with great humility and spirituality. A motivational talk was conducted entitled “Happy Hormones”. Letting them know that we need to laugh more, promote happiness, and achieve a full life! The day concluded with lunch, gifts, and the signing of a collaborative agreement between the two organizations. It was an inspiring day of volunteering. Not only did we spend quality time with the patients, but we listen to their stories, acknowledge their needs, and created bonds of friendship with people in our community. We were reminded that sometimes a small gesture can have a great impact and can make a difference.
