Celebrate Reading

Celebrate Reading is an annual Altrusa literacy project held on Dr Suess’ Birthday and the same time as the Read Across America program. The club purchases class room sets of books to read at the public and private preschools as well as public kindergarten in the community. Altrusans read the book to their assigned class then distribute new copies of the book read to each of the children. This project supports the literacy skills of each child and advances their education. Generally, 300 to 400 books are distributed by the Sikeston club at the completion of this project.

Tamariki, Togs and Towels

This project supplied disadvantaged children with resources, (namely a waterproof bag, containing togs, towel, and swimming goggles), enabling them to take part in the summer swimming lessons at school. Improving water skills is essential to reduce the drownings in New Zealand, a small island nation surrounded by water with many pools, rivers and lakes.
Each school library also received books and water safety literature.

Tijeritas for Kids (Scissors for Kids)

The “Tijeritas for Kids” (Scissors for Kids) service project arises from the need to provide free haircuts to children with limited economic resources in the town of Guánica monthly basis. Our goal is to impact the educational system of Guánica with free haircuts aimed at school-age students, in which good hygiene and sanitation practices are promoted to provide personal care and health service. The fusion of both concepts creates in the student a level of self-esteem and confidence based on their appearance. Due to the success of this service project in the town of Guánica, we will soon include elderly and disabled people from our community.

Altrusa te viste para tu Prom (Altrusa dresses you for your Prom)

During the month of May 2022, Altrusa International of Guánica, Puerto Rico carried out the activity “Altrusa te viste para tu Prom” (Altrusa dresses you for your Prom) with the aim that all low-income students can enjoy the celebration of their high school graduation party. Every year many young people in Puerto Rico cannot attend their Prom due to lack of economic resources to buy their clothes. Graduating students from the Áurea Quiles High School and José Rodríguez de Soto School managed to get their long-awaited suit, shoes, and accessories for the day of their Prom. Hair, makeup, and manicure arrangements were given away too.

Dyslexia Kits

The Literacy Committee presented the Board with a proposal to assemble 4 Dyslexia kits for a local school with more than 10 nationalities, who are struggling to learn English. With help from the community we sourced and created some outstanding resources that have been gratefully received by the school. This included utilising the expertise of experienced practitioners in the club, who evaluated the source and relevance of material, and many others who colour photocopied, organised, and laminated both games and sheets for ease of repetitive use,and then filled the folders ready for teachers to in or update as material comes to hand.

Tools For Schools

Tools For Schools is our longest running Community Service Project. We support Literacy in the Educational setting, by equipping students with the “tools” (school supplies), needed to enhance the learning process. Over the years, more than a million school supplies have been purchased for distribution, which include items such as: pencils, crayons, erasers, colored pencils, notebooks, rulers, glue, glue sticks, scissors and paper. To be able to purchase these items, Altrusa of Mansfield holds a major Fundraiser, supported by our Community, for this worthwhile cause. Goals reaching upwards of $35,000 are raised, to meet the ever-growing school supply needs of our area teachers and students. Our Tools For Schools Committee then purchases the school supplies, while Club members count, sort, stack and organize the shelves, located in a mini-warehouse setting. Letters are sent out to local schools, and teachers fax to us, their completed “Tools” request forms. Our “Filling Sessions”, involving many volunteer service hours, begins in early August and continues throughout the year as needs arise. Once an entire school order is filled, the schools are contacted to pick up orders or Club members make personal trips to the schools to make sure the supplies reach the teachers and into the hands of students. We have received many thank you letters from classroom teachers, stating their appreciation for releasing the financial burden, from having to purchase much needed supplies themselves. It was stated, “Altrusa of Mansfield is a blessing to my students, who without the “Tools for Schools Program”, would have had nothing to jump start them with their learning and onto a successful school year.’

Socktober Collection in Conjunction with ILHS InterAct Club

Meredith Altrusa helped in the collection of socks during the month of October in honor of Make A Difference Day. A variety of socks for all ages were donated to the Community focused InterAct Club at Inter-Lakes High School, who in turn, provide to those in need. This is both a service project in response to a need in the Lakes Region, but also working to assist another Community Club comprised of our own local high schoolers…a joint effort within Meredith.

“Dímelo” (Talk to me)

The project aimed at improving communication and reading skills of elementary school students through the intervention areas of orality, functional reading/ writing, creative reading/ writing and audiovisual literacy to facilitate their comprehension, communication and broadening their cultural horizons.
Deficiencies of elementary school students in Spanish was identified, particularly those of the Aurora Méndez school (socioeconomically disadvantaged students), affecting their academic achievement and effective communication.
The structure of the project was created in coordination with school representative to improve reading skills using different literary genres. Lesson plan was implemented using novels, stories, legends, and poetry. Student attended a theatrical play and a recital of Afro-Caribbean poetry. These experiences were reinforced with socialized discussion, debates, writing of a poetic verse and drawing. Students prepared a Christmas card that was sent to soldiers In Guatemala as part of our Club’s SOS Project.
Values such as respect, punctuality and responsibility were reinforced. Twenty-six students were benefited and a total of 435 hours in service was invested, along with a budget of $1,851.68 and active participation of 80% of club members.
We appreciate the opportunity to plant a seed of knowledge and wisdom to students in so much need.

ALTRUSA AUDIOBOOK LIBRARY

With grants from BC Gaming ($5,000) and Altrusa International Foundation ($4,000 US), the Altrusa Club of Nanaimo set up its own Playaway Audiobook library for our sight impaired clients. Audiobook deliveries were integrated into our current library book delivery schedule. We hope to grow our inventory to serve more people in the community. A HUGE thank you to Vicki for making initial contact with the supplier and getting the ball rolling! Our new library now has a home in Elizabeth’s garage. Elizabeth and Linda are in charge of selecting books. Marean helped Elizabeth with the grant application. When the order arrived, Elizabeth, Donna and Vicki categorized, labelled and shelved the books. Then, with help from Donna and Shirley, Elizabeth created a lending information binder to track our clients and audiobooks. Janice S produced a welcome letter with operating instructions for distribution to all clients on the first delivery, while Trudi sewed the client delivery bags with a different colour for each of the three routes. Sharen, Pat F, Vivien, Roberta, Pat W and Elizabeth made the first delivery on April 8th, and Jan W paid all the bills! Teamwork, teamwork, teamwork!!!
